# In Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu ist eine der meistbesuchten Touristenattraktionen in Südamerika (UNESCO Weltkulturerbe seit 1983) und eine sehr gut erhaltene Ruinenstadt der Inkas. Sie liegt auf ca. 2400m über Meer im Nebelwald über dem Urubambatal, ca. 75km nordwestlich von Cuzco.
Vielleicht war Machu Picchu kurzzeitig die Hauptstadt der sich von den Spaniern zurückziehenden Inkas, bevor sie sich nach Vilcabamba zurückzogen, wo sie 1572 endgültig besiegt wurden?
1911 wurde Machu Picchu von Haram Bingham «wiederentdeckt» resp. zum ersten Mal fotografiert und dokumentiert.
